Determining
your Class of Fax / Modem
V14 was originally designed to work with only Class 1 modems.
They currently are the most prevalent type of fax / modem on the
market. Some high end modems are Class 2 or support both Class
1 and 2.
To
determine what class of fax / modem you have, you will need to
make sure that the modem is installed properly, is Hayes compatible,
and that you have some sort of communications program installed.
Most modems come with a communication program of some type, like
Crosstalk or QuickLink, but you can use ProComm (if you have it)
or even Windows Terminal program. Once you have one of those running,
you will need to get to a place where you can enter commands for
the modem. The following commands will determine what the Class
of modem is:
AT
This should return an OK from the modem
AT+FCLASS=?
The modem should then reply:
0,1 For a Class 1 Fax
0,2 For a Class 2 Fax
0,2.0 Also for a Class 2 Fax
0,1,2 For a Class 1 and Class 2 Fax
Note: Class 2 only modems
require Class 2 software like QuickLink 2.2.2!
TeleMagic,
Inc has not tested V14 with Class 2 modems, faxing with V14 may
not work!
Class
2 only modems will not load the Fax software TSR driver if you
try to use them with a Class 1 fax software. The driver software
would act like the modem is not connected properly or not turned
on, so that on start up you might see an error message like this:
Modem not found, do you wish to re-initialize the modem? y/n
This
error message could truly mean that the modem is not connected
or turned off, but you can use the Modem command above to sort
out incompatibilities.
